About tryhard collective
The project came to be starting from a joke in front of a coffee shop, with creatives without an academic background. I was curious how far we can take this and if we can actually build everything up from the ground on our own... and we did.
I curated the artists, the social platforms and made a cryptic PR stunt that managed to bring more than a few hundred people to see the show over Bucharest's Noaptea Alba a Galeriilor (NAG) weekend. Considering I had to deal with finding and preparing a place, curating everyone, working on my own artworks, making sure we were following Covid protocols, creating and posting daily PR content on our socials, sadly I did not have the time to sign up to be an official location on the NAG map.
The cryptic PR stunt consisted of daily posts of different pigeon doodles without captions. None of our socials presented any information to lead the public into understanding what they are seeing, hence a micro virality of the phenomenon and a curious crowd gathered around. In time the posts were followed with short descriptions in mainstream coding, so people could take part in slowly uncovering the mystery of tryhard's doodle pigeons. The final stage followed a sticker hunt around the city - whoever found and tagged the page 3 times, had the chance to be the first to find out about our soon-to-be exhibition show and what tryhard was about.
Here is our social media statement
This collective of young and upcoming artists was formed with the intent of proving that art exists in various shapes, that it has different backgrounds, and that it is not well defined, but also that anyone can express themselves through art.
In today’s art scene, there are many rules and standards that inhibit younger or inexperienced artists from exhibiting their work from fear of failure or embarrassment. At the same time, there are many exaggerated methods and subjects through which bold artists try to catch the public’s eye, sometimes with intent, with the hope that the public’s shock, when presented with the chosen topic, will spark something. Because of this we began a series of projects through which we ridicule, critique, or add on to what others before us showcased.
Through this collective we try to encourage art expressed by anyone, through any media, finding subjects for the whole group to tackle and interpret in their own way - and most importantly - they are encouraged to experiment without fear.
